Spiritsway Passage ¶
DM Note — True Nature The Spiritsway Passage is a portal at its core — the actual crossing is a spiritually maintained transit to another point in the archipelago, not a physical walk through a gate. It was erected at the northern edge of Stonegate as a joint spirit-mortal construction after the First Pact, built to fulfill the Pact’s mandate that access to the interior must be granted but restricted. It is the only known safe crossing through the Mountain Wall. The tremendous stone doors are real and are not merely decorative. They serve as a physical failsafe: even if the portal is inadvertently opened, the doors prevent transit. Both layers — the doors and the portal — require the specialized work of the Order of the Keystone to operate correctly. Control is layered by design. The city of Aru’Mas grew around it as a strategic and treaty obligation, concentrating the Crown’s forces at the point the city is most bound to defend. The Passage’s location defined the city’s shape. At the northernmost point of Stonegate stands the Spiritsway Passage — the sole sanctioned entrance to the untamed wilds of the Ahvantir Archipelago and the only known safe crossing through the Mountain Wall that rings the inner islands. It is more than a gateway: it is a living expression of the First Pact, maintained jointly by the city and the spirits of Ahvantir, and the reason the city exists where it does.
The Passage is formed from colossal stone doors set within a frame of obsidian-veined granite, covered in an intricate network of runic symbols that pulse faintly with arcane energy. These runes represent the Pact’s terms, serving as both a spiritual seal and a warning to those who approach. The doors are not just physical barriers — they are a failsafe layer built into the Passage’s design, ensuring that an inadvertent activation of the portal within does not result in unauthorized transit. Both the doors and the portal require the specialized work of the Order of the Keystone to operate, a task that demands intense concentration and precise ritual coordination.
Origin and Purpose ¶
The Spiritsway Passage was erected at Year 0 MC, simultaneous with the signing of the First Pact that ended the Landing War. The Pact’s terms mandated that access to the interior of the archipelago must be granted but also restricted and protected — the Spiritsway was built as the physical expression of that mandate.
It was a joint construction: the mortal side contributed the stonework, the runic sealing, and the institutional infrastructure of the Order of the Keystone; the spirit side contributed the passage itself — the actual transit mechanism that carries travelers through the Mountain Wall to the interior of Ahvantir. Neither side could have built it alone. Neither side controls it alone.
The city of Aru’Mas grew around the Passage in the years following Year 0 as both a strategic necessity and a treaty obligation. The Crown’s concentration of forces at Stonegate is not coincidental — it is the city fulfilling its Pact commitment to defend and steward the only sanctioned crossing between the outer shores and Ahvantir’s interior.
Appearance and Design ¶
The Spiritsway Passage is a marvel of both architectural and magical design. Its massive stone frame is adorned with carved scenes depicting the pivotal moments in Aru’Mas’ history, including the city’s founding and the forging of the First Pact with the spirits of Ahvantir.
Each stone panel is intricately engraved with symbolic representations of spiritual harmony, valor, and wisdom—the guiding principles of the Threefold Path. The carvings are filled with spiritual lore, depicting the binding of rogue spirits, the negotiation of the Old Pacts, and the heroic tales of those who ventured into Ahvantir and returned to tell the tale.
Above the doors sits a massive keystone sigil crafted from orichalcum, a rare, spirit-infused metal. This sigil acts as both a spiritual focus and a magical anchor, channeling the protective wards that surround the passage. When the Spiritsway is in operation, the keystone glows with a steady, resonant light, signifying the balance of energies that define the threshold it guards.
The Order of the Keystone ¶
The Order of the Keystone is a highly specialized group of mages responsible for the maintenance, operation, and defense of the Spiritsway Passage. They are not merely gatekeepers, but spiritual stewards, entrusted with preserving the balance between Aru’Mas and Ahvantir.
Roles and Training ¶
To join the Order of the Keystone, mages must undergo rigorous training in runic magic, spiritual diplomacy, and the arcane rituals required to manage the complex energies of the Spiritsway Passage. The order is divided into three primary roles:
- Wardweavers: These mages are responsible for maintaining the protective wards that shield the Spiritsway Passage. They regularly inspect the runes, repairing any disruptions and reinforcing the wards to repel spiritual attacks or rogue magic.
- Gatecallers: These mages are the only ones capable of opening and closing the passage. The ritual is a complex and draining process that requires precise coordination, as the runes must be perfectly aligned to ensure a safe transition. Gatecallers are often regarded as some of the most powerful mages in the city, capable of channeling immense magical energy.
- Pactkeepers: Specialists in spiritual diplomacy, Pactkeepers maintain the spiritual agreements that allow the Spiritsway to function without inciting the anger of the spirits. They perform regular rituals of appeasement and serve as mediators when new spirits seek to approach the gateway.
The Order of the Keystone is led by Archdruid Elarion Vale, a veteran druid known for his expertise in spiritual negotiation and ritual magic. Elarion’s role involves both overseeing the passage’s daily operations and guiding the Order’s interactions with the spirits, ensuring that the Old Pacts are respected while keeping the passage secure.
Blessings and Wards of the Spiritsway ¶
The Spiritsway Passage is protected by multiple layers of arcane wards and spiritual blessings, each designed to secure the passage against potential threats from either side of the boundary.
1. The Binding Ward ¶
- The Binding Ward is the primary protective enchantment surrounding the Spiritsway Passage. It is woven directly into the stone structure, making it resistant to magical tampering and physical assault. This ward anchors the spiritual energies of Ahvantir, preventing them from overwhelming the passage or breaching its defenses.
- The Wardweavers of the Order regularly conduct rituals to reinforce the Binding Ward, ensuring that its energy remains intact and potent. The ward is particularly effective against hostile spirits and disruptive magic, dispersing threats before they can affect the passage itself.
2. The Veil of Concordance ¶
- The Veil of Concordance establishes a spiritual boundary between the city and Ahvantir, harmonizing the energies on both sides and reducing the risk of spiritual agitation. This ward is maintained through the Ritual of Concordance, a monthly ceremony led by the Order of the Keystone.
- The Veil acts as a filtering mechanism, repelling entities that do not align with the Old Pacts. Spirits that attempt to breach the passage without sanction are either turned away or weakened by the Veil’s influence, maintaining the balance of the boundary.
3. The Blessing of the Trium ¶
- The Blessing of the Trium is a sacred enchantment granted by the Church of the Threefold Path, imbuing the passage with the guiding virtues of harmony, wisdom, and valor. The blessing serves as both a spiritual alignment and a protective force, ensuring that the passage remains a place of balance and unity rather than conflict.
- The blessing is linked to the keystone sigil, acting as a conduit for spiritual energy that sustains the overall protection of the passage. Members of the Order of Harmony from the church often participate in the rituals that maintain the blessing, strengthening the connection between the passage and the spiritual principles of Aru’Mas.
